Bots can be a bit of a pain, however there are fixes to make them "smarter" but really you either want to team up in MP, or go for it solo. Often "crashes" are in fact the host leaving. A lot of people complaining about these issues are only connecting to public games rather than dedicated servers. As long as you connect to servers with a good ping you will have no connection issues. Unfortunately as with all MP games you will get people who don't care and just want to ruin the game, but there are plenty of servers and there is the handy vote kick option. It can be played as you see fit, whether you like to set up group firing lines and progress slowly to the objective or go hell for leather with your flamer and beat the speed run challenges is entirely up to you and your group.
